Sports | July 19, 2010 | ShareAscot Racecourse is one of the most famous and leading English racecourses in the United Kingdom. It is located in the small town of Ascot, Berkshire. The major utility of the racecourse is thoroughbred horse racing. The course is owned by the British crown estate and is located very close to Windsor Castle being just six miles away.
The prestigious Ascot Racecourse was founded in the year 1711 by Queen Anne. The first race, “Her Majesty’s Plate, was held on 11 August 1711. Seven horses participated in the competition, each carrying a weight of 12 stones (76 kg). It comprised of three separate four-mile (6437 m) heats.
Every year, the British royal family including HM Elizabeth and The Prince of Wales attend the Royal Ascot. It consists of three enclosures attended by guests on Royal Ascot week. The Royal Enclosure – is the most prestigious of the 3 enclosures with recent visits from the Queen and Royal Family members. Access to the royal enclosure is restricted with High security on the day. The Dress code is strictly followed. The ladies are supposed to wear a day dress along with a hat also keeping in check the length of the dress. Ladies must not show bare midriffs or shoulders. The gents are supposed to wear a black or grey morning dress with a top hat.
The most amusing of the races is The Ascot Gold Cup. It is held on Ladies’ Day on the Thursday. There is astounding prize money on offer of over £3,000,000.
Being one of the most high profile and efficient racecourses in the country, it proudly hosts 9 of the UK’s 32 annual Group 1 races, the same number as Newmarket.
Ascot today stages twenty-five days of racing annually which comprises of sixteen Flat meetings held in the months of May and October. The Royal Meeting, held in June, remains a major draw. The highlight of the Ascot Racecourse Is the Ascot Gold Cup. It is one of the most prestigious races and Stakes of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth run over the course in July.
