Greece on Strike

strike Greece on StrikeIt was but obvious that the aftermath of the recent billion pounds deal stuck between Greece and the IMF and other bodies was bound to generate major opposition from the public unions. Greece is said to exemplify the strongest economy with high standards of living and at the same time boasted of owning the largest shipping industry in the world. However, the recent recession and the debt crisis seems to have sent the country down a major muddle of disorder. The deal between the IMF, the Central Bank, the European Commission and the other countries demands Greece to cut down the budget deficit and the spending capacity that would eventually lead to a major rise in taxes and unemployment. With the prime minister apologizing and at the same time promising that this is a temporary move and is being done in the best interests of the nation and its citizens, people fear that this move would mean taking a deeper plunge into recession.

The austerity measures taken by the government on the economy has led to a major overhaul amongst the workers who were forced to come on the streets to object to the changes being made. The recent general strike that was the third strike in a few months led to a complete paralysis of the transport mainly in Athens where a mass of thousands of people had gathered on the roads to protest against the measures taken up. Things like increase in the retirement age, wage freezes, increase in taxes etc is forcing people to retire or resign before the intended period so that they don’t loose out on the lump sum money they are entailed to at the time of their retirement because of these measures being implied.

It is a disappointing fact that the rich people have been avoiding taxes for decades now which eventually puts all the burden on the middle working class. This adds up to the anger that has been building up inside the people as it is completely unfair and unjust on the government’s behalf to support the rich, as they get richer, while the poor are made to sacrifice and adjust everything just to cater to their greedy needs.
